Art 1 Final Portfolio

1. This project was my favorite one this semester. This is my cartoon skeleton drawing that we did in the beginning of the semester. Even though this is not one of my best pieces, I still enjoyed doing it. It took my perspective of the plain, average cartoon to a whole new level. I chose to draw Tigger because he is my favorite cartoon character. Before we started this project we worked with drawing bones in the human body, which was tricky because they are hard to draw. I took the skills learned here and applied them for the rest of the sketches and drawings I did throughout the semester. For my first project in an art class, I am extremely happy with what I have created.

2. This project was the value sketches on the iPad. I did like this project because it taught me how to blend colors to give different 2D shapes a 3D quality. I feel like I learned the most from this project because the rest of the semester I could apply the skills learned here in my other projects. Learning value helped me grow as an artist and understand how I can make a boring picture look more lifelike. Also doing this on the iPad because I could mess up and start over until I got the feel of how to do it. This especially helped in my landscape painting because I needed to make it less cartoon-ish and more lifelike. It is amazing how taking different shades of colors and applying them in certain areas can really bring a picture to life.  Although this is not one of my best projects, I still enjoyed doing it and I am thankful I could learn so well from it.

3. This is the sketch I did of the landscape I was going to paint. I feel like this is the best representation of how I have grown as an artist through out the semester. Before we started painting we had to do a rough sketch of our landscapes in our sketch books and this is how it turned out. I am happy with what I did, even for a rough sketch, because I used and incorporated skills taught in other projects into this. Using different colors, I tried to blend them together to create a more defined color. It was harder to do on paper because the colors just cover each other, but this way I could get an idea of how I wanted to paint my landscape. If I would have sketched this on the first day of the semester it would not have turned out like it is now. Since I learned how to add value and texture to my sketches and paintings, I could execute this sketch 10 times better now than earlier this semester.

4. I feel like this project was the least important in concepts talk. This is my contour sketch of a shoe. I am not very happy of what I did because it was very poorly drawn. I had a harder time with the contour sketches out of everything. Also, I did not use contour lines any other time during the semester so I do not feel like it was a very crucial thing to learn. It is always good to learn different techniques and skills in doing different things but I don't feel like it was needed as much as other concepts learned. Someone else may feel different on if this was effective or not but I do not feel like it was needed. It was interesting to learn but I did not enjoy this project like I enjoyed the other ones.

5. This is my landscape painting of one of the many beautiful cliffs looking over the sea in Haiti. I took the original picture that this painting is based off of while I was on a mission trip to Haiti in May 2008. This was one of the last projects we did this semester in art so I was able to use everything I learned this semester and show it in this painting. I used different shades and tints of colors to add value and texture to the different areas of this landscape. The most difficult part of this painting was the rocks at the bottom of the cliff. I struggled with them at first because I didn't know how to make them realistic so I just outlined them. Then Mrs. Rossi showed me how to add different greys, browns, blacks, and whites to give them shape and texture. Overall I am extremely proud with what I created and I could never have done this without learning the different skills or without the help of the best art teacher, Mrs. Rossi! :)
